Matt Goodwin

Person

Matt Goodwin is a GB News presenter, Substack commentator, and former academic who was appointed professor of political science at the University of Kent in 2015 before leaving in 2024. He previously served on the government's Anti-Muslim Hatred Working Group and resigned in 2015, alleging the government "resists real engagement with Muslims". Hope Not Hate describes his subsequent rightward shift as "following his own blueprint", arguing he has used his academic expertise in far-right messaging to build a career as a "radical-right influencer". He has claimed on GB News that more than 50% of social housing in London is occupied by non-British people - a figure Hope Not Hate notes is approximately 14% - and has written of Britain's "demographic CRISIS", warning that the "white British" population is forecast to become a minority by 2070. Prospect reported that his polling company PeoplePolling finished bottom of the accuracy rankings at the 2024 general election. He served as a visiting fellow at Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), an Orbán government-funded institution described by Good Law Project as a "propaganda outfit", reportedly receiving between €5,000 and €10,000 per month - a claim Reform denied. He is honorary president of Students4Reform and gave an address to the Heritage Foundation - the US think tank behind the radical Project 2025 blueprint for Trump's second term - in July 2024. In January 2026, he contested the Gorton and Denton by-election for Reform UK, losing to the Green Party candidate. He subsequently attributed his defeat to "the Islamo-woke Green alliance" and alleged widespread electoral fraud, while his own account of the campaign contained disparaging references to Muslim residents of the constituency. In May 2026, he was announced as a speaker at a Traditional Britain Group black tie dinner, a group whose past speakers have included American alt-right figure Richard Spencer, before pulling out following enquiries by Novara Media. His 2026 book Suicide of a Nation was reported to contain references apparently generated by ChatGPT. He has also been accused of making inappropriate sexual comments to a female colleague at GB News.
