Laila Cunningham

Person

Laila Cunningham is Reform UK's candidate for the 2028 London mayoral election. Born in Paddington as Laila Ahmed El-Meleigy, she is a former solicitor and Crown Prosecution Service barrister who was elected as a Conservative councillor on Westminster City Council in 2022 under the name Laila Dupuy, before defecting to Reform in summer 2025. She did not contest her seat in the May 2026 local elections, having been announced as Reform's mayoral candidate. Her Conservative career ended after a chaotic withdrawal from the 2024 general election in Rotherham; the only contested constituency in England, Scotland and Wales not to field a Conservative candidate. She has pledged to introduce automatic stop-and-search for anyone wearing a face covering, saying "if you're hiding your face, you're hiding it for a criminal reason". On GB News she said of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency: "I think people in England will welcome that."
